The party walks into the stereotypical tavern. There's a band of
inebriated patrons throwing darts at a drawing of the king. Over in
the other corner are people placing bets on oil-wrestling halflings.
And, over here .... the prerequisite dice game.

Query -- anyone come up with novel dice games involving polyhedral
(non-d6) dice? Something like Yatzee for d12s, or craps for D20, or
the like? Something enjoyable enough that people would actually choose
to play it OUTSIDE of the context of the game?

I did something like that--it was a pretty playable cross between
Yahtzee and craps. I'll see if I can dig up the rules.

ISTR something like this from 1st or 2nd edition. It was a list of several
gambling games for the characters. The only one I remember was a craps-
like game played with 3 d20's. The shooter rolls two dice, then he rolls
the third. The object is to roll a value on the third die that's between
the values of the first two. Like craps, onlookers would make side bets.

Murphy: "Well I choose them."
Q: "That's NOT an option!"
M: "Then you shouldn't have framed it as one."

This game was called "In Between" and it was in the 1E DMG Appendix F:
Gambling (p. 215).

Other games included "Slot Variant" and "Zowie Slot Variant", which had
the player roll 3d6 and get a payoff if certain rare dice combinations
came up (much like a slot machine) and a version of poker dice: roll
5d6, trying to get a pair, three of a kind, straight, full house, etc.

Back in 1993, an AD&D player named Desmond Reid created a document
called "Dice Games for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" with 3 games that
used non-d6 dice: "One-Hundred" (d10), "Rotation" (d8), and "Sixes"
(d10). It also had 9 other d6-based games that could be adapted to use
non-d6 dice. It can be downloaded here:
